Macron Vows Accountability After Violent Student Protests

President Emmanuel Macron condemned rioters and looters following nationwide student protests and tasked the Prime Minister with addressing demands for education reform.

President Emmanuel Macron addressed the nation Sunday night to condemn rioters and looters following a wave of violent student protests. Macron stated that those who sought to bring down the republic will be held accountable and insisted that those who destroyed property or looted must pay and reimburse their victims.

To address the root causes of the unrest, which began in mid-September, Macron tasked Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu with developing proposals to provide more teachers and improve schools. The protests have intensified political polarization ahead of the 2027 presidential election, an office Macron is constitutionally barred from seeking again.

Political reactions to the violence have split along ideological lines. Populist-left leader Jean-Luc Melenchon of La France Insoumise has embraced the student movement, while far-right leader Marine Le Pen of the National Rally characterized the unrest as a crisis of trust and authority that threatens democracy. With Macron's popularity at a record low of 15 percent and the national deficit remaining high, the youth have emerged as a critical voting bloc for future elections.
