Democrats Sweep Midterms Despite Record Elon Musk Spending
Democrats regained control of the House and Senate after record-breaking Republican spending by Elon Musk failed to prevent major losses in Texas and nationwide.
Democrats regained control of both the House and Senate in the 2026 midterm elections, overcoming a record-breaking financial effort by Elon Musk. Musk served as the cycle's largest individual donor, contributing between $445 million and $475 million to Republican causes through America PAC, the Senate Leadership Fund, and the Congressional Leadership Fund. Despite this investment, Republicans backed by America PAC lost 29 of 44 federal races.
Texas became a primary battleground where Musk's spending failed to secure key seats. Democrat James Talarico defeated Republican Ken Paxton for the U.S. Senate, while Gina Hinojosa defeated Greg Abbott for Governor. Talarico characterized his victory as a rebuke of Musk, claiming the billionaire sought a "personal senator" to facilitate the sale of Texas land and water for data centers. Financial disclosures show Musk channeled over $158 million to the Senate Leadership Fund and $10 million via a private trust to the Lone Star Liberty PAC to support Paxton.
Following the results, shares of Tesla and SpaceX initially fell approximately 5% before investors began buying back in. Musk responded to the losses on X with sarcasm, joking that his "election-interfering space lasers didn't work this time" and noting that space-based data centers now looked appealing. Musk now faces a Democratic-controlled Congress that may launch investigations into his activities.
