Israel Intensifies Southern Lebanon Offensive Despite Fragile Ceasefire

The Israeli military launched a series of ground incursions and airstrikes in southern Lebanon, displacing over one million people and violating a US-mediated ceasefire.

The Israel Defense Forces intensified military operations across southern Lebanon over the weekend of August 17, 2026, deploying ground vehicles and airstrikes in the Nabatieh, Marjeyoun, and Bint Jbeil districts. The offensive focused on seizing the Ali al-Taher hills to destroy Hezbollah infrastructure, with reports that dozens of militants remain trapped in underground positions. These actions occurred despite a ceasefire that took effect on April 17, with specific violations reported in Hadatha, where Israeli forces opened fire with automatic weapons.

Since the broader conflict began on March 2, Lebanese authorities report 4,346 deaths, 12,301 wounded, and the displacement of over one million people. The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) documented a sharp increase in activity between August 5 and 16, averaging 137 projectiles per day. UNIFIL also declared that the planting of Israeli flags along the Naqoura-Tyre coastal highway violated UN Security Council resolution 1701.

Diplomatic efforts led by the United States have struggled to maintain stability. While a June 26 framework agreement proposed Israeli withdrawal in exchange for Hezbollah's disarmament, Hezbollah has rejected the deal, demanding an unconditional withdrawal. Defense Minister Israel Katz stated that Israel will not leave the area until Hezbollah is disarmed. Meanwhile, Lebanese President Joseph Aoun has called for the extension of UNIFIL's mandate, which expires at the end of 2026, to ensure regional stability.
