Senators Accuse Trump Administration of Withholding Secret Spying Ruling

Senators Ron Wyden and Adam Schiff demand the release of a secret court ruling regarding illegal warrantless spying on Americans.

U.S. Senators Ron Wyden and Adam Schiff have accused the Trump administration of illegally withholding a secret Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court ruling. The March 17 opinion faulted intelligence analysts for using search filters to access the communications of Americans without the necessary legal justifications or approvals.

Although the statutory 180-day window for public release expired on September 13, the administration has not declassified the document. Attorney General Todd Blanche had previously committed in writing to meet this deadline, but the ruling remains secret. In a demand letter sent to Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton and Attorney General Blanche, the senators requested an explanation and the names of the officials responsible for the delay by November 6.

This dispute unfolds as intelligence officials seek the renewal of Section 702 surveillance. The authority lapsed in June and currently operates under a court-approved extension that expires in March. The controversy follows the May decision by FBI Director Kash Patel to close the bureau's Office of Internal Auditing.
