Trump Administration Plans 100% Tariffs on Russian Oil Buyers

The Trump administration plans 100% tariffs on countries buying Russian crude oil, sparking concerns over the stability of Indian exports.

The Trump administration is planning to impose 100% tariffs on countries that purchase Russian crude oil. This proposal has raised concerns regarding the stability of Indian exports, as India and the United States are currently negotiating a bilateral trade agreement.

Analysis indicates that India has the capacity to diversify its trade to mitigate these risks by targeting a potential $200 billion market across 15 alternative countries, including the United Kingdom, France, the Netherlands, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Nepal, and several Latin American nations.

Despite the tariff threats, India's merchandise exports to the U.S. grew to $87.3 billion in 2025-26. Experts caution that these tariffs would likely trigger inflation for American consumers, who depend on India as a low-cost, competitive supplier of labor-intensive goods, thereby harming both economies.
