Chancellor Merz Seeks Female Successor for German Presidency

Chancellor Friedrich Merz called for a female federal president and emphasized digital sovereignty while the government responded to violent youth protests.

Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced he will propose a consensus candidate from the political center to the Christian Democratic Union by November 9, stating that the next federal president must be a woman. The move comes as the second term of President Frank-Walter Steinmeier concludes in March 2027.

During an AI summit in Berlin, Merz advocated for digital sovereignty to prevent Germany from becoming dependent on third-party technology providers. Simultaneously, the far-right Alternative for Germany party is organizing a trilateral summit in Abu Dhabi for early 2027, where they plan to meet with Russian and American advisers to discuss the restoration of Russian gas deliveries.

Domestically, the government is addressing violent youth protests that occurred over the weekend in cities including Frankfurt. While Merz praised youth political engagement, he condemned the rioting. The unrest sparked a cabinet dispute when Education Minister Karin Prien attributed the violence to integration failures among migrant groups, a claim Defense Minister Boris Pistorius contested.
