Governor Josh Shapiro Backs Statewide Ban on Flock Cameras

Governor Josh Shapiro announced his support for bipartisan legislation to ban Flock cameras across Pennsylvania during a press conference on Friday. Shapiro stated that the technology is not in the public interest and noted that the cameras are already prohibited on state property and Pennsylvania Department of Transportation roadways. He further clarified that the Pennsylvania State Police does not use the technology.

The governor's position follows a conflict in Franklin County, where the county government agreed to terminate its contract with the camera company. This decision faced opposition from the Franklin County Sheriff's Office, which argued that the technology is essential for public safety.

Chief Deputy Dan Foy of the Franklin County Sheriff's Office expressed concern that removing the cameras would hinder the ability of law enforcement to quickly apprehend violent criminals. While Shapiro maintained that law enforcement needs tools to keep communities safe, he explicitly stated that Flock cameras are not a tool he supports.
