Majority of Albertans Support Remaining in Canada

A majority of Albertans intend to vote for the province to remain in Canada in the upcoming October 19 referendum, according to a poll conducted by Leger between August 21 and 23. Approximately 65% of respondents support remaining in Canada, while 23% favor a binding referendum on separation.

Public concern regarding American interference stands at 62%. This anxiety coincides with an ongoing trade war between Canada and the United States and comments from U.S. President Donald Trump suggesting Canada could become the 51st state. Andrew Enns, executive vice-president at Leger, noted that these factors, along with Trump renaming a lake to Lake America, contribute to the current level of concern.

While 48% of respondents believe separation would have a negative economic impact—a decrease from June figures—those favoring remaining in Canada report high certainty that their positions will not change. Elections Alberta is currently monitoring the process for foreign interference as 72% of respondents indicate they are likely to vote.
