Election Commission Postpones Events Amid Calls for Kumar Resignation

The Election Commission of India indefinitely postponed two youth-focused voter awareness programs in Uttar Pradesh scheduled for September 28. The events, which included a regional conference in Meerut and a young voter interaction in Varanasi, were to be addressed by Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

The postponements follow reports of internal friction within the poll panel. Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi allegedly objected to several Commission decisions, including raising concerns about the voter-list update process at least 14 times over 10 months. Reports suggest Kumar's management of these revisions could disenfranchise eligible voters and damage confidence in the electoral process. While the commission maintains all decisions were unanimous, an official attributed the event delays to scheduling and venue availability.

In response to the controversy, Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi and the Cockroach Janata Party have called for Kumar's resignation. The Cockroach Janata Party, a Gen Z-led movement, is shifting its strategy from large-scale demonstrations in New Delhi toward school audits and systemic electoral reform efforts.
