Trump Launches Economic D-Day as Nuclear Risks Rise
President Donald Trump initiated a massive economic sanctions campaign against Iran while advisers warn of potential nuclear escalation following conventional munitions shortages.
President Donald Trump launched a massive economic offensive termed Economic D-Day to isolate Iran after conventional military strikes were suspended. As part of this operation, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent implemented sanctions against nearly 60 entities, individuals, and vessels, including 21 based in China, to render Iran an economic outcast.
The shift in strategy follows reports that the United States Department of War has depleted its stockpiles of high-precision munitions and interceptor missiles. While the Trump administration denies any ammunition shortages, the reported depletion has led to a pause in recent kinetic strikes.
Former presidential counterterrorism adviser Joe Kent warned that the failure of conventional efforts to topple Iranian leadership could lead to the use of nuclear weapons. Kent argued that targeting underground uranium enrichment facilities with nuclear strikes is a realistic possibility because a full-scale ground operation is not feasible.
