U.S. Warns Poland of Russian Plot to Test NATO

The United States warns Poland that Russia plans limited military provocations on Polish soil to undermine NATO unity and halt military support for Ukraine.

The United States has issued repeated intelligence warnings to Poland that the Federal Government of Russia is planning a limited-scale armed provocation on Polish territory. These potential operations could include drone or missile strikes on critical infrastructure, simulated air raids to trigger defenses, or limited ground incursions by Russian or Belarusian forces staged from Belarus or the Kaliningrad exclave. Moscow may attempt to disguise these actions as navigational errors, GPS failures, or emergency rescue missions to create a false-flag scenario.

The reported strategic objective is to portray NATO as a paper tiger and pressure Western allies into suspending military aid to Ukraine in exchange for a Russian withdrawal. In response, Poland has conducted military exercises to demonstrate a rapid counter-response, while the U.S. has led naval exercises in the Baltic region. Germany's air force chief Holger Neumann vowed to defend all NATO territory, identifying Kaliningrad and the Kola Peninsula as potential targets.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk stated that Poland is preparing very intensively for these scenarios, warning that the coming months could be critical for Poland and the Baltic states. Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski warned Vladimir Putin against testing the alliance's unity, while Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz cited a historic rearmament program to counter daily provocations. NATO leaders are scheduled to meet in Ankara on July 7 and 8 to discuss the threats and reaffirm their commitment to Article 5.
