Chancellor Friedrich Merz Meets Top European Central Bank Candidates

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is meeting with leading candidates Klaas Knot and Pablo Hernández de Cos to negotiate the succession of ECB President Christine Lagarde.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is conducting a series of meetings with the primary candidates to succeed European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde. Merz is scheduled to meet with Klaas Knot in the coming days, followed by Pablo Hernández de Cos in the following weeks.

These negotiations come as European governments coordinate on several high-level vacancies at the European Central Bank. In addition to the presidency, member states are maneuvering over the chief economist position held by Philip Lane and the markets portfolio currently managed by Isabel Schnabel. While Christine Lagarde's term does not formally expire until October 2027, she has not ruled out leaving the post earlier.

The shift in strategy indicates that Germany is no longer pursuing Bundesbank President Joachim Nagel for the presidency. Instead, the German government may focus on securing other influential roles within the bank for candidates such as Joerg Kukies or Markus Brunnermeier.
