Michael Dell Calls for AI Safeguards Amid Regulatory Debate

Dell Technologies CEO Michael Dell urged governments and companies to implement safeguards and bounded permissions for artificial intelligence to mitigate potential threats.

Dell Technologies CEO Michael Dell stated that artificial intelligence models require safeguards and controls to mitigate potential threats, asserting that governments have a role to play in the process. He advocated for companies building AI tools to establish bounded permissions, noting that while technology can do great things, it can also cause significant harm.

These comments follow warnings from former Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon regarding the risks of superintelligence, as well as calls for regulation from OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei. Despite these industry warnings, the Trump administration has opposed a coordinated slowdown in AI development.

President Donald Trump secured a morally binding agreement from AI executives on September 29 to self-regulate safety through outside evaluators. This agreement makes further federal regulation unlikely before the November midterm elections, where AI and data center expansion have emerged as key political issues. Regarding the controversy over data center growth, Dell noted that opposition is serving as a positive catalyst for improving energy efficiency and does not expect it to significantly impede growth by 2027.
