BBC Accuses Donald Trump of Flouting Court Rules in Lawsuit
The BBC has requested court sanctions against Donald Trump for failing to produce documents in a $10 billion defamation lawsuit.
The British Broadcasting Corporation has accused U.S. President Donald Trump of disregarding court rules by failing to hand over documents in a $10 billion defamation lawsuit. In a filing with a Miami court on September 25, the broadcaster stated that Trump has flouted discovery obligations regarding records he previously agreed to disclose.
Trump filed the suit in Florida over the editing of a 2024 Panorama documentary about the U.S. Capitol riots, claiming the program caused him reputational and financial injury. The documentary previously triggered the resignation of former BBC Director-General Tim Davie and an apology from Chairman Samir Shah for an "error of judgment" in the editing process.
The BBC is seeking to have the case dismissed, arguing that the program never aired in the United States and that the litigation creates a "chilling effect" on reporting. While the broadcaster has already produced over 108,000 pages of documentation, it has now requested that the court issue a firm order or sanctions to ensure Trump complies before the December 18, 2026, discovery deadline.
