Trump Administration Negotiates Drug Discounts With Biotech Companies

The Trump administration plans to announce new drug-pricing agreements with several midsized biotech companies on Monday. These deals require companies to provide discounts on outpatient drugs to state Medicaid programs to ensure U.S. prices align with those charged in foreign countries.

In exchange for these discounts, the biotech companies will receive exemptions from pilot programs that mandate similar price cuts in Medicare, and some may receive relief from tariffs. This initiative expands upon previous most-favored nation agreements reached with 17 large pharmaceutical companies, including Pfizer Inc. and Eli Lilly & Co. Those earlier deals involved price reductions for federal health insurance and the listing of medications on a Trump-branded website.

White House spokesman Kush Desai stated that the administration is making progress on negotiating deals to cut drug costs. While the administration presents these agreements as a victory for healthcare affordability before the midterm elections, the actual savings for patients and the federal government remain unclear because Medicaid already receives statutory discounts.
