Trump Mandates Data Centers Build Own Power Sources

President Donald Trump has mandated that data center developers build their own electricity sources to avoid straining the national grid and secure global AI dominance. This policy has led developers to repurpose retired jet engines from aircraft boneyards into electrical generators to bypass years-long waitlists for grid connections.
Companies such as ProEnergy and Fortress Transportation and Infrastructure Investors are scaling the production of these converted turbines. Elon Musk's xAI has already installed eight such units at a data center in Mississippi. In contrast, Google has stated it will wait for grid-connected power rather than adopting this method.
The shift has drawn legal challenges from the Southern Environmental Law Center and the NAACP. These groups argue that converted turbines are less efficient and more polluting than conventional plants. In Mississippi, xAI faces lawsuits over alleged permit violations and the emission of carbon monoxide and volatile organic compounds in predominantly Black communities.
