Fetterman argued that this obsession with President Donald Trump has rendered the party inflexible, making it virtually impossible for members to acknowledge positive developments or agree with the opposing side without facing punishment.

Fetterman cited his support for Operation Epic Fury, a joint U.S.-Israeli military operation in Iran, and his support for the nomination of Markwayne Mullin as Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security as examples of breaking party lines. He described the military strikes against Iran as a historic moment and criticized colleagues for prioritizing the party base over national interests. He also criticized the party for its inflexibility regarding solidarity with Israel and the perceived normalization of Nazi imagery among some candidates.

These comments come amid internal party friction regarding strategy for the midterm elections. While leadership has centered campaigns on resisting the Trump administration, some members argue this approach lacks a cohesive vision. To broaden appeal, the party has proposed extending health care subsidies and improving housing affordability. Despite these internal divisions between progressives and moderates, recent NBC polling shows Democrats holding a 50-44 advantage in voter preference for congressional control.
