Greg Abbott Threatens Airport Grants Over Islamic Ablution Stations

Governor Greg Abbott has ordered a review of state grants provided to entities operating Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport and George Bush Intercontinental Airport, threatening to revoke current and future funding. Abbott alleges that the installation of Islamic ablution stations, used for ritual washing before prayer, constitutes illegal religious discrimination by favoring one faith over others. He has referred both airports to the U.S. Department of Transportation for a federal investigation into whether these accommodations violate non-discrimination laws.

Officials at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport clarified that the expansion of these facilities is currently an internal proposal and has not been approved. While a state filing estimated the cost at $300,000, airport officials stated the actual cost would likely be closer to $120,000 and funded through airport revenue rather than taxpayer dollars. The airport noted it has operated one such station since 2019 without issue.

Texas State Senator Tan Parker has joined the scrutiny, demanding transparency from the airport board regarding the approval process and maintenance costs. Parker indicated that the completeness of the board's response to his inquiries will determine if the Senate Committee on Transportation holds a hearing on the governance of Texas' joint municipal airports.
