Mass Migrant Crossing Into Ceuta Leaves 83 Dead

At least 83 people died during a mass attempt by tens of thousands of migrants to cross from Morocco into the Spanish territory of Ceuta. Spanish authorities confirmed 72 fatalities, primarily caused by drowning and stampedes, while the Government of Morocco reported an additional 11 deaths. Spanish Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska stated that 72,000 people irregularly entered the territory, though 70,000 have since been returned to Morocco.

Between 3,000 and 5,000 migrants remain in Ceuta, including roughly 860 unaccompanied minors who are legally entitled to protection under Spanish law. Local youth and migrant centers are currently at capacity, leaving many children to beg for food on the streets. Activist Ramsés Mohamed Azumik claimed the lack of resources is a strategy designed to force migrants to return to Morocco through hunger and exhaustion.

Morocco attributed the surge to human traffickers and misinformation regarding a Spanish Supreme Court ruling, while other analysts suggest the influx was an intentional effort to exert diplomatic pressure on Spain. In response to Moroccan territorial claims, Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares affirmed that Ceuta and Melilla are an integral part of Spanish territory. The crisis prompted a call for peace and justice from Pope Leo XIV, while far-right politician Santiago Abascal criticized the government for failing to protect the frontiers.
