US Senate Confirms David Brat as Ambassador to Australia

The US Senate confirmed former congressman David Brat as the next US ambassador to Australia to fill a post vacant since November 2024.

The United States Senate confirmed David Brat as the next US ambassador to Australia on Friday. Nominated by Donald Trump in April, Brat is a former Tea Party insurgent and economist who previously gained prominence for defeating House Majority Leader Eric Cantor in a 2014 primary.

Brat fills a diplomatic vacancy that has existed since November 2024. He arrives in Canberra during a period of diplomatic tension following the US imposition of 12.5% tariffs on various Australian exports in July, which were triggered by allegations of forced labor in production.

His deployment coincides with the 75th anniversary of the ANZUS treaty on September 1. Brat's primary objectives include managing the AUKUS defense pact, securing critical minerals agreements, and expanding Indo-Pacific partnerships. He will also be tasked with addressing Australia's regulations of the US tech industry. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese stated he would work with any nominee put forward by the US president.
