Ottawa City Council Votes to Rename Trump Avenue

The Ottawa City Council voted unanimously on September 23 to rename Trump Avenue, a residential street in the Central Park neighbourhood. The street was named over 20 years ago as part of a New York City-themed development, but council members stated it would not meet current formal commemorative criteria.

City councillor Riley Brockington spearheaded the motion, arguing that Donald Trump no longer deserves the honor due to repeated threats to Canada and attacks on Canadian sovereignty. Mayor Mark Sutcliffe supported the decision, citing the U.S. president's demonstrated hostility toward the country. The vote follows a period of strained relations, including the imposition of tariffs on Canadian goods and a U.S. executive order renaming Lake Ontario as Lake America.

Brockington will now lead a public consultation process with residents to select a replacement name, which may or may not maintain the original New York City theme. A final recommendation is expected for council approval by the second quarter of 2027. While some residents support the change, others have expressed concern over the inconvenience of updating their home addresses. Similar public petitions to rename other Trump-associated locations in Ontario, such as Trump Lake in Sudbury, have also emerged.
