Bright Blue Urges Andy Burnham to Raise Higher Tax Rate

The Bright Blue think tank has urged Prime Minister Andy Burnham to increase all tax rates, specifically proposing a hike in the 40% tax rate to 48% for individuals earning over £50,270. The organization intends for the resulting revenue to fund workplace benefits for the self-employed, though it acknowledges such a move would not increase British entrepreneurship.

This proposal follows the emergence of government documents suggesting HM Revenue & Customs could require landlords and self-employed workers to pay tax on a monthly basis for income they have not yet earned.

HM Treasury dismissed the proposals, with a spokesperson stating that the Chancellor remains focused on priorities to boost business and address the cost of living. The Treasury further noted that tax decisions are made during fiscal events rather than in response to speculation.
