Rebeca Grynspan Calls for Proactive UN Leadership

Rebeca Grynspan urged the United Nations to reduce risk aversion and prioritize peacemaking as she emerges as the frontrunner for Secretary-General.

Frontrunner for United Nations Secretary-General Rebeca Grynspan stated that the organization has become too risk-averse and requires a leader willing to accept the cost of diplomatic failure. Speaking ahead of a Security Council poll on October 17, the former Costa Rican vice president advocated for a more proactive UN focused on mediation, prevention, and peacemaking.

Grynspan proposed curbing bureaucracy and cutting jobs to address declining political clout and shrinking resources, though she argued that cost-cutting alone is insufficient without structural reform. As part of this shift, she suggested implementing greater flexibility in peacekeeping models, citing the mission in Haiti as a primary example.

Grynspan has led in four of five informal straw polls as the organization prepares for the end of Antonio Guterres' second term on December 31. While positioned as the favorite, she acknowledged the possibility of a discouraging vote from one of the five permanent Security Council members. Her calls for efficiency align with criticisms from U.S. Ambassador Michael Waltz regarding bureaucratic bloat and duplication within the organization.
