JD Wetherspoon Prepares Fourth Quarter Update Amid Rising Costs
JD Wetherspoon expects sales growth in its July 22 trading update, leveraging the World Cup and summer weather to counter government-linked cost increases.
JD Wetherspoon will release its fourth quarter trading update on July 22, 2026. The UK pub chain anticipates sales growth driven by warm summer weather and the World Cup, aiming to offset a recent slowdown in trade and broader consumer pressure affecting the hospitality and retail sectors.
Financial performance has shown volatility, with like-for-like sales growing 6.1% in the second quarter before slowing to 3.4% in the third quarter ending in April. Following a March profit warning that drove shares to a one-year low, the company's share value has since recovered as it outperforms the wider hospitality market.
Despite the recovery, the company expects a dip in annual profits due to approximately £62.4 million in government-linked costs. These expenses include wage increases, National Insurance contributions, and a £2.4 million packaging levy. In response to these pressures, CEO Tim Martin is expected to reiterate calls for reduced VAT for the hospitality sector as Andy Burnham prepares to take office as Prime Minister.
