Mark Carney to Pitch Ring of Fire at Investment Summit
Prime Minister Mark Carney will promote Ontario's Ring of Fire minerals in Toronto amid planned protests by a coalition with alleged ties to Chinese funding.
Mark Carney will open the Canada Investment Summit in Toronto on September 14 to promote the Ring of Fire. The Prime Minister intends to position the mineral-rich region in Ontario as a strategic source of critical minerals to decrease Canada's reliance on foreign leverage.
An anti-capitalist coalition of labor unions, climate networks, and Indigenous groups plans to oppose the event. This group will hold a counter-summit from September 12 to 14, ending with a mass rally designed to disrupt the official summit. The coalition includes World BEYOND War, which maintains ties to the American group CODEPINK.
While no direct allegations of foreign funding have been made against the Ring of Fire coalition, reports link CODEPINK and World BEYOND War to Neville Roy Singham. Singham is a China-based millionaire currently under investigation by the United States Department of Justice and a congressional committee for allegedly financing pro-China propaganda.
