US Brokers Ceasefire After Strikes on Iranian Nuclear Sites

The United States brokered a ceasefire between Iran and Israel following U.S. and Israeli airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities and Iranian missile attacks on Israel.

The United States brokered a fragile ceasefire between Iran and Israel on June 23, 2025, ending nearly two weeks of escalating military conflict. The hostilities began on June 13 with Israel's Operation Rising Lion and intensified as Iran launched over 550 long-range missiles at Israeli targets, including a strike that destroyed a residential building in Beersheba. In response, the U.S. executed Operation Midnight Hammer, conducting precision airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities to pressure both nations into a truce.

The conflict resulted in over 600 Iranian deaths and at least 28 deaths in Israel. While President Donald Trump claimed the strikes completely obliterated Iran's nuclear program, IAEA Director Rafael Grossi and Iran's Foreign Ministry acknowledged the facilities suffered enormous damage without being entirely destroyed. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei later characterized an Iranian strike on a U.S. airbase in Qatar as a victory and a slap to the face of the United States.

Although President Trump indicated that officials would begin talks in July, the outlook remains tense. Iranian Ambassador Iraj Elahi stated that negotiations are meaningless without credible guarantees to prevent future aggression. Israel remains on high alert, and Iran continues to suspend cooperation with international atomic monitors while maintaining control of the Strait of Hormuz.
