US and Iran Maintain Three-Day Hostilities Pause

The United States and Iran have maintained a pause in hostilities for three days following a nearly two-week period of escalation. Donald Trump, President of the United States, stated that the two nations are currently having "good talks," though an Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman denied requests for direct peace negotiations, suggesting mediators may only be conveying messages.

Mediators from Qatar and Pakistan are working to return both countries to the negotiation table to restore a memorandum of understanding signed in mid-June. The conflict began after Iran fired at ships in the Strait of Hormuz, prompting US strikes on Iranian infrastructure. Iran responded with drone and missile attacks on US-hosting bases in Jordan and Iraq, causing the deaths of four service members, and launched drone attacks against Saudi Arabia.

Tensions remain high despite the pause. The United States Central Command continues to enforce a naval blockade on Iranian ports and redirects commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz. Meanwhile, Iran continues to demand a mandatory toll for ships transiting the waterway, though the Government of Oman has proposed a voluntary toll mechanism as a potential compromise.
