Israel Reburies Theodor Herzl's Grandparents on Mount Herzl

Israel held a state ceremony on August 5, 2026, on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem to rebury Shimon Leib and Rivka Herzl, the grandparents of Zionism founder Theodor Herzl. The remains were exhumed on July 29 from a cemetery in Zemun, Belgrade, Serbia, following a four-year coordination effort between the World Zionist Organization, the Israeli Foreign Ministry, and Serbian authorities.

The reburial fulfills the final unfulfilled clause of Herzl's 1903 will, which requested his ancestors be transferred to the Land of Israel. The event occurred 77 years after Herzl and his parents were reburied at the site in 1949. Organizers delayed the ceremony for two years, as they deemed it inappropriate to proceed while Israeli hostages were being held by Hamas in Gaza.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that the event signaled the victory of Zionism and emphasized national unity, though he departed the ceremony abruptly due to a security flare-up in Lebanon. President Isaac Herzog highlighted the need for diplomacy and statesmanship to follow military achievements. Other officials noted that the process finally resolved a long-standing historical requirement of the Herzl family legacy.
