Trump Declares National Energy Emergency Amid Department of Energy Cuts

The declaration comes as the U.S. Energy Information Administration reports record electricity peak demand driven by artificial intelligence tools and severe heat waves.

Despite the emergency declaration, the administration proposed a fiscal year 2026 budget that requests a 26% cut to non-defense programs within the U.S. Department of Energy. These represent the largest financial cuts in the agency's history. This proposal, combined with the passage of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, reduces funding for government-funded science and technology research and development.
