Donald Trump Invokes National Security to Justify Press Bans and Military Arch

President Donald Trump is increasingly invoking national security to bypass congressional approval and legal challenges to his administration's initiatives. Most recently, Trump declared that CNN, MS NOW, and Politico represent a "threat to our National Security," using this justification to ban the outlets from the White House. This move has triggered lawsuits from the affected organizations and a suspension of pooled coverage by major networks, including Fox News.

Trump has also shifted the purpose of a proposed 250-foot triumphal arch near Washington, D.C., claiming the structure must now serve as a "military complex" equipped with drones, snipers, and ammunition. This marks a departure from previous administration arguments that the project was authorized by a 1925 congressional bill. Representative Don Beyer Jr. has criticized the plan, arguing that placing a weapons cache near high-traffic tourist and commuter routes is dangerous.

These actions follow a broader pattern of using security claims to advance other projects, such as a $400 million White House ballroom and the deployment of National Guard troops to Democratic-led cities. While the Supreme Court of the United States blocked global reciprocal tariffs in February 2026, it later overturned a lower court ruling to allow the ballroom construction to proceed based on security concerns. Legal experts warn that broadening the definition of national security to include monuments and press access may jeopardize traditional judicial deference to the executive branch.
