Donald Trump Claims Credit for Record Prescription Drug Price Drop

President Donald Trump and the White House claimed credit for a 3.1% drop in prescription drug prices in July, marking the sharpest decline in over 60 years. During a photo-op on Friday, Trump displayed a Washington Post headline reporting the decrease and told reporters, "I told you that was going to happen."

White House officials, including Communications Director Steven Cheung and Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, promoted the data on social media as a direct result of Trump's actions. Cheung stated the decline was "All thanks to President Trump!"

However, the Washington Post reported that independent experts from Harvard University and Vanderbilt University attribute the price decrease to the Inflation Reduction Act. This 2022 policy, enacted under former President Joe Biden, allows Medicare to negotiate prices for popular prescription drugs. Experts stated that Biden's policy is the more likely driver of the cost decline than any of Trump's initiatives, as the first reductions under the law took effect at the start of the year.
