Nigerian Public Sector Unions Launch Three-Day Warning Strike
Public sector unions began a three-day warning strike across Nigeria following government failure to meet demands amid disputes over President Bola Tinubu's prosperity claims.
The Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council launched a three-day warning strike starting midnight Friday, involving federal, state, and local government employees nationwide. The strike affects staff across various ministries, departments, and agencies after the government failed to address union demands.
The labor action coincides with political friction over President Bola Tinubu's Independence Day declaration that Nigeria has entered an "age of prosperity." While some economic experts praised the message, the Christian Association of Nigeria and opposition voices challenged the claim, citing insecurity, rising prices, and declining household purchasing power.
Regional instability and political unrest further complicate the national climate. Terrorists kidnapped passengers, including 19 corps members, along the Owerri-Onitsha Expressway in Imo State. Meanwhile, in Akwa Ibom State, police cancelled a planned two-million-man march organized by the Obidient Movement, prompting anger from the Nigeria Democratic Congress.
