Peter Obi Vows to Jail Election Riggers in 2027 Bid

Presidential candidate Peter Obi of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has outlined a series of strict governance reforms and expressed fears for his personal safety ahead of the 2027 general elections. Speaking during an interview on Arise TV and at the inauguration of the NDC secretariat in Asaba, Obi vowed that anyone found rigging an election would face imprisonment, stating the penalty would apply even for the manipulation of a single vote.

Obi pledged to end the practice of political leaders seeking medical treatment abroad, promising that overseas care would only be permitted via referral. He criticized President Bola Tinubu for spending over three weeks in France while national conditions worsened, asserting that if elected, all his holidays would be spent within Nigeria. He further committed to rebuilding the national healthcare system and improving federal infrastructure, specifically the East-West Road.

Despite these ambitions, Obi expressed uncertainty about whether he will be alive by the time of the election, citing multiple petitions and investigations. He urged state governors to allow all political aspirants to campaign freely regardless of party affiliation, promising that while he would punish electoral fraud, his administration would not harass political parties and would instead adopt an inclusive governance model to ensure national stability.
