Zelenskyy Reinstates Fedorov and Replaces Army Chief Syrskyi

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reinstated Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov and replaced Commander-in-Chief General Oleksandr Syrskyi with Major General Mykhailo Drapatyi. The leadership overhaul follows six days of nationwide protests in Kyiv and other cities sparked by Fedorov's initial dismissal. The unrest was fueled by a strategic clash between Syrskyi, a Soviet-trained commander favoring traditional infantry, and Fedorov, who championed asymmetric warfare and drone innovation.

Prior to his reinstatement, Fedorov rejected several alternative senior government roles, including vice prime minister for defense innovation. He maintained that only the roles of president, military chief, and defense minister possess the necessary authority to combat procurement corruption and execute asymmetric operations. Protesters had given the president a Friday deadline to reinstate him.

Syrskyi's tenure was marked by criticism from troops regarding high casualty rates and an excessive reliance on drones, which he described as an experiment. The new leadership team, including acting Defense Minister Yevhenii Khmara and General Drapatyi, is now tasked with developing a comprehensive defense strategy. This transition aims to move away from top-down Soviet-era command structures in favor of a corps structure that delegates decision-making to field commanders to better counter Russian forces.
