Russian Air Strikes Leave 550,000 Ukrainian Families Without Power
Ukraine struggles to repair its energy grid after Russian strikes damaged over 10 facilities, leaving hundreds of thousands of families without electricity before winter.
Russia has intensified ballistic-missile and drone strikes against Ukraine's electricity, oil, and gas facilities, targeting energy infrastructure 76 times in a single week. Volodymyr Zelensky reported that recent overnight attacks damaged more than 10 facilities, leaving at least 550,000 families without power.
In Kyiv, Mayor Vitali Klitschko stated the city's electricity generation capacity has been destroyed, resulting in rolling blackouts and the temporary suspension of the Metro system. Officials warn that these power failures threaten sewage and water supplies, which could trigger an epidemiological catastrophe. While nuclear power plants provide over 55% of the national electricity supply, the grid remains highly vulnerable as attacks shift toward high-voltage transmission lines.
The World Bank estimates the long-term cost of restoring the energy sector at $91 billion, with urgent repairs for 2026 estimated between $4.9 billion and $7 billion. Power company DTEK reported its thermal power plants have been attacked more than 230 times as the country races to secure energy supplies before winter.
