Moonshot AI Kimi K3 Launch Triggers Global Tech Sell-off

Moonshot AI released the Kimi K3 open-source model, sparking a global technology sell-off and pushing semiconductor stocks into a technical bear market.

Global stock markets fell on July 17, 2026, following the unveiling of Kimi K3, a 2.8 trillion-parameter open-source AI model by the Chinese startup Moonshot AI. Launched at the World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai, the model reportedly closes the performance gap with leading U.S. offerings like OpenAI's ChatGPT and Anthropic's Claude. The release triggered fears that open-source competition would undermine subscription revenues for U.S. firms and reduce the necessity for high-compute infrastructure spending.

The fallout was severe in the semiconductor sector, where the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index fell 20% from its June peak, entering a technical bear market. Nvidia shares dropped over 2%, briefly losing the title of the world's most valuable company to Apple. Global semiconductor stocks shed approximately $3.3 trillion in market value, with significant losses for Intel, ARM Holdings, and Marvell Technology. Additional pressure came from Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing's high capital expenditure guidance and reports that Alphabet Inc.'s Gemini 3.5 Pro launch was delayed.

Broader market instability was exacerbated by President Xi Jinping's launch of a global AI alliance intended to operate independently of Western regulatory control. In Asia, markets in Taiwan and South Korea fell over 6%, while Japan's Nikkei 225 dropped 4.03%. In the U.S., the Nasdaq fell 1.4% and the S&P 500 dropped 1.01%. Markets were further pressured by rising oil prices and inflation concerns following U.S. attacks in Iran.
