Thirty-Two Nations Condemn Iran for Executing Protesters

A coalition of 32 nations and the European Union's top diplomat issued a joint statement condemning the Islamic Republic of Iran for its ongoing use of the death penalty to silence dissent and punish individuals for exercising human rights. Signatories including Canada, France, the United Kingdom, Australia, and Germany called for an immediate end to capital punishment and the release of all arbitrarily detained individuals.

The diplomatic action follows a surge in executions since March 19, with the United Nations reporting at least 56 deaths on national security-related charges. This escalation occurred after nationwide anti-government protests over the cost of living in late December and a joint U.S.-Israeli military attack on February 28 that triggered a broader Middle East war.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot characterized the executions as a continuation of mass atrocities against the Iranian people. United Nations rights chief Volker Turk stated that the death penalty was being used by Tehran to instil fear.
