Trump Energy Dominance Strategy Faces Economic Strain Amid Iran War

President Donald Trump prioritizes oil and gas drilling to exert geopolitical power while domestic fuel prices rise and strategic reserves hit 40-year lows.

Donald Trump has implemented an energy dominance strategy that prioritizes oil and gas drilling to wield geopolitical power, a policy now facing significant challenges due to the ongoing war in Iran. While the United States achieved a record oil export level of 5.7 million barrels a day in May as global buyers avoided the Strait of Hormuz, the strategy has created domestic instability. U.S. consumers are facing higher fuel prices, and strategic reserves have fallen to a 40-year low.

To further distance the U.S. from green energy, the administration accelerated the expiration of clean-energy tax credits and paid companies nearly $4 billion to scrap offshore wind projects. These moves contrast with the approach of the Government of China, which used investments in clean-energy supply chains and strategic reserves to cut its crude imports by half between February and June, insulating its economy from supply shocks.

The economic fallout has impacted political support for the conflict, with only about one-third of MAGA voters believing the war in Iran is worth its associated economic costs.
