Houthis Blockade Saudi Ports as Trump Conditions Nuclear Deal

Houthi rebels launched drone strikes against Saudi Arabian crude oil supply and transport infrastructure, specifically targeting routes from eastern Saudi Arabia to Yanbu. The Houthis, led by spokesperson Yahya Saree, claimed the attacks were retaliation for Saudi drone incursions into Yemeni airspace and the downing of a Saudi Bayraktar Akinci drone in the Al-Jawf Governorate on July 26. The rebels also declared a maritime blockade in the Bab al-Mandeb Strait, targeting Saudi commercial shipping to mirror Iranian maneuvers in the Strait of Hormuz.

Donald Trump stated the United States is not currently involved in the Saudi-Houthi conflict, though he indicated the U.S. might intervene if necessary. Trump is negotiating a bilateral civil nuclear deal with Saudi Arabia and has conditioned its finalization on the Kingdom joining the Abraham Accords, asserting that Iran is no longer a regional power that justifies Saudi hesitation to normalize ties with Israel.

Regional tensions have widened as the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned Iraq for allowing Iran-backed militias to launch drone attacks from its territory. Simultaneously, Iran launched missile attacks on Saudi territory and effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz. In response to the Houthi escalation, Yemen's internationally recognized government, represented by foreign minister designate Afrah al-Zouba, declared it is prepared for military escalation to prevent the rebels from seizing control of critical waterways.
