Graham Platner Withdraws from Maine Senate Race Amid Rape Allegations

Democratic nominee Graham Platner suspended his campaign and later resigned after a former partner accused him of rape and other misconduct.

Democratic U.S. Senate nominee Graham Platner resigned from the Maine senatorial race on July 9, 2026, following a series of sexual misconduct allegations. The collapse was triggered by a Politico report in which a former partner, Jenny Racicot, alleged that Platner entered her home uninvited and raped her in 2021. Another former partner, Lyndsey Fifield, alleged a pattern of domestic abuse and the non-consensual removal of condoms during sex. Platner categorically denied the allegations, calling them "categorically false," though he cited struggles with PTSD and alcohol abuse following his military service.

The scandal prompted a rapid exodus of institutional support. High-profile endorsers including Senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, as well as Representative Ro Khanna, rescinded their support. The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee and Senate Majority PAC threatened to withhold all funding for the Maine race if Platner remained on the ballot. Republican Senator Susan Collins described the allegations as "appalling."

Following his resignation, the Maine Democratic Party approved an emergency nominating convention to select a replacement by the July 27 legal deadline. The process has been marked by friction between party leadership and progressive factions over the influence of the Platner campaign and the ideological leanings of a successor. Potential candidates for the nomination include former state Senate President Troy Jackson, former public health chief Nirav Shah, and Secretary of State Shenna Bellows. President Donald Trump criticized the situation, questioning the credibility of the accusers and noting that Democrats had previously ignored similar charges made by a Republican woman.
