U.S. Budget Deficit Hits $1.973 Trillion Through August

The U.S. Treasury Department reported a $1.973 trillion budget deficit through August 2025, amid record spending and a legal challenge to tariff policies.

The United States Department of the Treasury reported that the U.S. budget deficit reached $1.973 trillion through August of fiscal year 2025, marking a 4% increase over the same period in 2024. August alone saw a monthly deficit of $345 billion, fueled by record monthly spending of $689 billion. The Treasury identified Social Security, defense, and net interest on debt as the primary drivers of this spending.

Offsetting some costs, the government recorded a record monthly tariff windfall of $29.5 billion, bringing total fiscal year 2025 tariff revenues to $165 billion. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick attributed this surge to trade policies and deals with Japan and the European Union established by President Donald Trump.

This revenue stream faces a significant legal threat following a ruling by the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. The court found that most reciprocal tariffs violated the 1977 International Emergency Economic Powers Act. This ruling is set to take effect on October 14 unless the Supreme Court overturns it. In response to the overall national debt, Elon Musk characterized the government as "basically unfixable."
