Troy Jackson Leads Susan Collins in Tight Maine Senate Race

Democrat Troy Jackson holds a narrow lead over Republican Senator Susan Collins in a contested Maine Senate race, according to a recent AARP poll.

Democrat Troy Jackson holds a narrow 50% to 47% lead over Republican incumbent Senator Susan Collins in the race for Maine's U.S. Senate seat, according to an AARP poll conducted from September 20-22. The three-point advantage falls within the 3.1 percentage point margin of error, and a separate New York Times/Portland Press Herald/Siena poll contradicts these findings, placing Collins ahead 49% to 46%. The Cook Political Report considers the race a toss-up with implications for control of the U.S. Senate.

While Jackson leads overall, Collins maintains a 9-point advantage among voters aged 50 and older, leading 53% to 44%. This demographic typically comprises over 60% of turnout in federal cycles. Older voters cited Social Security, health care, and rising electricity and grocery costs as primary motivations. Amid the campaign, Collins denied ProPublica reports regarding a dropped Department of Justice and FBI bribery probe into whether she steered federal contracts to a defense contractor in exchange for political donations.

In the gubernatorial contest, Democrat Hannah Pingree leads Republican Bobby Charles 52% to 39%, with Independent Rick Bennett at 6%. Jackson became the Democratic Senate nominee in July after Graham Platner withdrew following scandals. The Republican party faces additional headwinds including an unpopular war in Iran and sliding approval ratings for President Trump.
