Xi Jinping Proposes Four Principles for African Conflict Resolution

President Xi Jinping proposed a four-part framework for resolving African hotspot issues during a meeting with Togo's president in Beijing.

Chinese President Xi Jinping proposed four principles for resolving hotspot issues in Africa during a meeting in Beijing on October 15 with Faure Essozimna Gnassingbe, the president of the Council of Ministers of Togo.

The framework emphasizes an "Africa-led" approach that prioritizes African ownership of regional affairs to reduce external interference and geopolitical rivalry. The principles advocate for upholding fairness and justice through adherence to the UN Charter, promoting the cessation of hostilities to achieve peace, and addressing both the immediate symptoms and root causes of conflict.

Xi Jinping suggested that lasting stability requires combining short-term security measures with long-term development. The proposal links security to investments in infrastructure, education, and industrialization to eliminate structural drivers of instability, such as poverty, inequality, and youth unemployment. The framework promotes mutual respect and dialogue over military confrontation and unilateral sanctions.

African diplomats and scholars have described the principles as a practical reference guide for promoting peace and development. The proposal aligns with the African Union's Agenda 2063 and its Silencing the Guns initiative.
