European Parliament Shortlists ICC for Sakharov Prize Amid US Sanctions

The European Parliament shortlisted the International Criminal Court for its top human rights prize as the US imposes sanctions to dismantle the tribunal.

The European Parliament has shortlisted the International Criminal Court (ICC) for the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought, the European Union's highest honor for human rights and democracy. The nomination serves as a public show of support for the tribunal as it faces severe sanctions from the United States government.

President Donald Trump has vowed to dismantle the court brick-by-brick, authorizing sanctions that target the entire institution. These measures, which include barring financial transactions and potentially disabling internet and telecom systems, were triggered by ICC arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant regarding alleged war crimes in Gaza, as well as investigations into U.S. military personnel in Afghanistan. Secretary of State Marco Rubio justified the actions by citing American sovereignty.

The ICC has characterized the U.S. pressure as an assault on the rule of law, while President Judge Tomoko Akane described the sanctions as an attempt to obstruct justice. In response to Washington's pressure, Venezuela and Chad have announced plans to withdraw from the court. Meanwhile, the European Union is being urged to invoke its blocking statute to protect the ICC's operations.

The ICC is one of three finalists for the prize, alongside Tanzanian opposition leader Tundu Lissu and Iranian sisters Taraneh and Romina Rahimi. The nomination follows the Nobel Peace Prize award to former ICC judge Navi Pillay, a decision Donald Trump called disgraceful. A final winner will be selected this week, with the ceremony scheduled for December.
