India Considers Social Media Ban for Children Under 16

The Government of India is conducting consultations with stakeholders and Parliamentary Standing Committees to implement safeguards for children on social media, including a potential ban for users under 16. The initiative aims to mitigate risks associated with cyberbullying and online addiction while enhancing intermediary accountability and AI regulations.

Electronics & IT Secretary S. Krishnan stated that the government is studying global legislative efforts, specifically those in the European Union and Australia, to determine the best approach for digital safety. No final decision has been reached, as the administration continues to coordinate with various stakeholders.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed support for the measures, praising Australia's nationwide ban on social media for minors as "inspiring the world." He noted that India is "learning a lot" from the Australian model as it develops its own regulatory framework.
