Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Campaigns for Troy Jackson in Maine
Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez joined Democratic Senate candidate Troy Jackson in Portland to advocate for progressive policies in a toss-up race against Senator Susan Collins.
U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez joined Democratic Senate candidate Troy Jackson in Portland, Maine, on Thursday for a "Students vs. Billionaires" town hall hosted by More Perfect University. The event aimed to mobilize the progressive base 12 days before the November 3 election in a toss-up race against incumbent Republican Senator Susan Collins.
During the event, Ocasio-Cortez and Jackson advocated for Medicare for All, tuition-free public higher education, and expanded abortion access. They called for defunding U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and ending U.S. involvement in Iran and Gaza, arguing that foreign spending should be redirected toward domestic healthcare and cost-of-living issues. Jackson also proposed using federal funds to establish a rail system connecting Portland and Bangor and pledged to increase research for cancer and Alzheimer's.
Ocasio-Cortez criticized Senator Collins' voting record, specifically her vote to confirm Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh. In response, the Collins campaign characterized Jackson as being aligned with "far-left progressives." To contrast this, Senator Collins recently campaigned in Norway and Lewiston with centrist former Democratic Senator Joe Manchin to highlight her bipartisan record. Recent polls show Jackson holding a slight lead in the critical battleground race.
