Trump Brokers Voluntary AI Safety Pact With Tech Leaders

President Donald Trump established a voluntary self-policing agreement with major AI companies to avoid government regulation and maintain a competitive edge over China.

President Donald Trump hosted a White House luncheon with leaders from top AI companies to establish the Joint Commitment on Frontier Responsibilities, also referred to as the White House Accord on Super Intelligence. The agreement, which Trump described as "morally binding," commits companies including OpenAI, Google, Meta, Anthropic, xAI, and Nvidia to implement internal controls for cybersecurity, biosecurity, and chemical threats. The pact emphasizes industry self-policing and the rebranding of artificial intelligence as "super intelligence" to avoid government-mandated guardrails.

Trump argued that official government regulation would hinder the United States in its competition with China and opposed "any attempt to construct a globalist scheme to control" the technology. The agreement requires companies to utilize board-level oversight and independent external auditors.

Despite the voluntary accord, regulatory and legal pressures persist. The Federal Trade Commission opened a broad safety investigation into OpenAI and Anthropic regarding the risks of agentic AI following a breach of Hugging Face's production systems. Simultaneously, the state of Florida asked a court to bar OpenAI from developing new models without outside oversight as part of a lawsuit concerning harm to children.
