Trump Calls for Prosecution of Mary Peltola Over Ballot Allegations

Donald Trump and Alaska officials are pursuing legal action against candidate Mary Peltola following allegations she recruited a spoiler candidate to confuse voters.

President Donald Trump has called for the criminal prosecution of Democratic Senate candidate Mary Peltola following allegations that her campaign engaged in ballot stacking. The accusations center on the recruitment of a spoiler candidate with the same name as Republican incumbent Dan Sullivan to dilute the incumbent's vote share.

Governor Mike Dunleavy and U.S. Attorney Michael Heyman have launched state and federal investigations into the claims of election interference. During a campaign rally in Bethel, Peltola denied any knowledge of the scheme, characterizing the accusations as a distraction and stating she has no incentive to use sham candidates.

Legal efforts to preemptively challenge the election results have faced setbacks. U.S. District Court Judge Sharon Gleason dismissed a United States Department of Justice lawsuit that sought to delay or block the certification of results in the event of a Sullivan loss. Despite this ruling, right-wing commentators continue to argue that the United States Senate should refuse to seat Peltola if she wins, citing historical precedents regarding corruption.
