Atiku Abubakar Sues to Disqualify President Tinubu for 2027

Atiku Abubakar and the African Democratic Congress filed a lawsuit seeking to disqualify President Bola Tinubu from the 2027 election over alleged certificate forgery.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and the African Democratic Congress filed a lawsuit in the Federal High Court in Abuja seeking to disqualify President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress from the 2027 presidential election. Atiku alleges that President Tinubu submitted a forged National Youth Service Corps discharge certificate to the Independent National Electoral Commission, claiming the document bears the name Tinubu Bola Adekunle rather than Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The plaintiffs also challenge provisions of the Electoral Act 2026, arguing that constitutional requirements for candidate qualification must take precedence over statutory restrictions.

During a hearing on September 1, 2026, proceedings stalled after Atiku's lawyer, Joseph Onu Silas, refused to serve originating documents to President Tinubu's counsel, Omosanya Popoola, citing a need for personal service or a written undertaking of authority. Justice Inyang Ekwo adjourned the matter to September 28, 2026, and warned all parties against discussing the pending case in the media.
