Russia Violates Moldovan Airspace and Strikes Border Infrastructure

The Federal Government of Russia increased pressure on Moldova throughout August 2026, conducting 17 airspace violations and striking Ukrainian border infrastructure along the Moldovan frontier. National Security Advisor Stanislav Secrieru stated these strikes target critical transit routes used for Ukrainian grain exports to Romania, noting that Russia aims to sever these corridors.

President Maia Sandu reported that five Russian drones entered Moldovan airspace shortly before the country's 35th independence anniversary, characterizing the incursions as an attempt at intimidation. During independence celebrations in Chișinău, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned that Russia seeks to ruin lives in both Ukraine and Moldova while making conditions difficult for Romania.

These developments occur as both Moldova and Ukraine pursue European Union membership. Baltic leaders, including Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna, have expressed concern that Moscow is using hybrid warfare in Moldova as a rehearsal for potential provocations against NATO members. Russia continues to maintain approximately 1,500 troops in the breakaway territory of Transnistria.
